Thought for the week

This Shabbat we bless the incoming month of Elul, the final month in a Jewish calendar year. This final month reminds us that Rosh Hashanah is now just a matter of days away. Throughout the millennia, it has been clearly established that this month has a totally different feel to it. They call it the 'wind of Elul blowing', as that familiar intensity of preparation for the High Holydays takes on added urgency.

When the physical weather changes and the warm days of summer recede, we dust off our sweaters and coats in anticipation of their use. It is no less important in Elul to brush up on our observance and performance of Judaism. As we get ready for our annual rendezvous, appointment and check-up with G-d, we should put ourselves in the correct mindset by adjusting our priorities accordingly.

At a Board Meeting on Monday 7 July the Honorary Executive and Board of Management voted that the throwing of sweets in Shul on Shabbat morning should cease.

There is a lift adjacent to the Freeman Susman Hall staircase.

It will work on Sunday and weekdays.

On Shabbat and Yom Tov the lift will operate on automatic shabbat mode.

However please note:

  • The lift is ONLY for the use of disabled people and the elderly
  • The maximum capacity is two people at a time
  • When in automatic mode the lift must be allowed to operate without assistance - the door will open and close very slowly and must not be pushed or pulled as this will damage the mechanism.
