Quote of the week


The influence of the Bible on the English language is enormous, and the name of today’s sidrah is but one example of such a borrowing. Eikev means, literally, ‘a heel’, but the Torah applies it figuratively, in the sense of ‘following on after’, ‘to be a consequence or corollary of’. Hence the opening phrase, Vehayah eikev tishme’un, ‘And it shall be that, on account of your having hearkened to… “This directly inspired the term, ‘following at the heels of’.

  • Rev Chaim and Gusta Graniewitz on the Barmitzvah of their grandson Amichai Michael Graniewitz in Israel.
  • Rochelle and Henry Garfinkel on the birth of their first grandchild, a son Edward Max to Joanna and Simon Cohen. Mazaltov also to grandparents Moira and Ronald Cohen and great grandfather Gabriel Cowan.
  • Lorraine and Norman Jonas on the occasion of the marriage of their daughter Claire to Richard Krushner, on Sunday 28 August. Mazaltov also to Michelle and Dennis Krushner and grandparents Essie and Peter Darbey and great-grandmother Ray Walker.

We now have an exciting new service on the website: "Ask the Rabbi" This is a notice board where you can post a question that will require a BRIEF answer from the Rabbi.
As it is a notice board you will also be able to see other questions and answers - so please visit regularly.


On Shabbat April 2nd, at the conclusion of the service, Stanmore members gave a presentation of their personal reflections on their recent pilgrimage to Auschwitz. This presentation, entitled "60 Thoughts for 60 Years", is now available to read on the website, together with photographs, on the Community Department page. If you are not already a regular visitor to our website, please contact the Shul office for details.

SYNAGOGUE SEATING—YAMIM NORAIM
If you have an allocated seat in the main shul and will not be using it over the
Yamim Noraim (Ladies and Gentlemen’s seat) please advise the office.

The loudspeaker system is not in use on Shabbat/Yom Tov. The shul loop system for the hard of hearing is in use, for halachic details please see the notice board.

Please inform the Shul office in writing if you wish the name of a relative or friend to be included in the Prayer for the Sick recited on Shabbat morning.

If you notice that a member has not been attending Shul for a few weeks, please inform the Wardens in order that they can make contact.
