Thought for the week

The setting for the giving of the Ten Commandments (commemorated on Shavuot) was the Sinai desert. It was deliberately chosen to remind us of the attitude we must adopt, in order to gain the benefits of Torah. A desert represents many things, safety not high among them. In fact, a desert is a place of sand, earth and dust. There’s not much in the way of food that can grow there, and very few people, if any, reside there. A desert is often spoken of as taming and conquering humanity. A desert reveals our human vulnerability.

The first condition for success in Torah study is humility. One must be humble and unpretentious to the level of desert dust. One must recognise that we owe our survival and success to the Almighty, who bestows us with the means and wherewithal to become what we are. Feelings of superiority must be challenged and removed, in the same way that a desert removes any vestige of self-importance to the one striving to remain alive.
