Thought for the week

This Shabbat, we once again read from two Sifrei Torah. Following the weekly reading from the first one, we read the Maftir from the second one. The title of the Maftir – Hachodesh, is in reference to the upcoming festival of Pesach. In the build-up to the original Pesach, immediately prior to the Exodus itself, the Israelite people was given its first ever Mitzvah as a new nation. This was the Mitzvah to sanctify each month, which was done once the new appearance of the moon was identified.

This Mitzvah of establishing the new month is powerful as it represents the close partnership between G-d and us. By entrusting us with this responsibility, G-d is effectively drawing us into the running of our religious destiny. We obviously have a clear directive from G-d, but the actual timing and subsequent implementation is down to human influence and contribution. In this way, we demonstrate yet again how much we are partners in G-d's Creation.
