Thought for the week

The Sidrah this week begins with the following words: “And these are the ordinances that you shall place before them” [Exodus: 21;1]. The foremost commentator – Rashi, explains the choice of words “place before them” (as opposed to “teach them”) that it was G-d’s intention that the laws not only be taught, but that they should be fully absorbed, understood, and easy to follow, like a table upon which food that is ready to eat is placed. The laws should similarly be placed before them, ready to be implemented.

The similarity of the Torah’s laws to food is striking. Not just in its readiness for use, but also in the effect they both have on the person. Whereas food provides strength, energy and nutrients that maintain the physical health and well-being of the individual, the Torah with its laws does the same, in a spiritual sense. Time for that spiritual check-up!
