Thought for the week

One activity in the Mishkan, described in this week's Sidrah, was the daily kindling of the Menorah. Although the instruction was that a Kohen was to kindle the Menorah, the Halacha - according to the great codifier Maimonides - is that any Jew (not necessarily a Kohen) could perform this action. In theory, the Menorah could be moved out of the holiness of the Mishkan so that any 'ordinary' Jew could engage in the lighting process. It is then returned to the Mishkan, and the instruction would have been fulfilled to the letter!

The crucial detail, as far as the Menorah is concerned, is that the identity of the one lighting it is of far less importance than the act itself. In fact the identity is of no significance whatsoever.

The soul of man is the light of G-d [Proverbs: 20.27]. We are, in essence, lights to illuminate the world. When we kindle our spark, we are taught that we must be confident that the flame will 'burn brightly and independently'. The world must be so affected by our spark that it glows and radiates on its own; the power of what we put in should have such a profound effect that the universe changes and becomes a force for good. All that is required is to light that 'Menorah'!
