Thought for the week
Ever wished you had a servant? If you did acquire one, how would you treat this individual? Would you be a fair master, or would you treat the person as a slave to be abused and bullied? This week’s Sidrah contains many detailed instructions for the prospective master to consider. Owning a servant brings with it responsibilities, which must be taken seriously.
According to strict Biblical law, a non-Jewish servant can be forced to do any and all tasks. But the Rabbinic Sages dictated that masters be compassionate and considerate to their subjects, even if they are not members of the faith.
The great teacher, Maimonides explained that it is both pious and wise to be compassionate. One should not place excessive demands on the servant. In fact, the early sages would first ensure that their servants were fed before they would sit down to eat. In our interactions with others – particularly with those over whom we exert a level of authority – we must take measures to be thoughtful and considerate of them and their needs.
