Thought for the week
One of the most important Mitzvot for the Jewish male is donning Tefillin each weekday morning. The main purpose of these leather boxes and straps, placed on the head and upon the biceps, is to regulate the mind and heart of the wearer towards his religious duties, helping to forge a strong bond with G-d. The first mention of this requirement is in this week’s Sidrah [Exodus: 13; 9, 16]. The Mitzvah is covered in two separate, though consecutive, paragraphs.
The next time the Mitzvah is mentioned is in Deuteronomy in two paragraphs that also form the first two paragraphs of the Shema. These four paragraphs are transcribed on parchments placed inside the Tefillin boxes. The head box has four individual cavities into which four parchments are placed. The lines from these cavities are clearly visible. The arm Tefillin has one larger cavity into which one parchment with all four paragraphs is placed. A truly uplifting way to begin the day!
