Thought for the week
This Shabbat is recognised by its famous designation – Shabbat Chazon, Shabbat of the Vision (taken from the first word of the Haftorah, where Isaiah's vision concerning Jerusalem's impending doom is discussed). It is the third and final Shabbat of the '9 Days of Sadness' and comes immediately before the Fast of Av.
Judaism generally does not approve of sadness, depression or gloom. Judaism encourages an upbeat and positive outlook to life, discouraging the constant worry beads that seem to afflict and plague so many. On the other hand, there have been enough tragedies in our history to justify some degree of sadness and reflection.
Chazon means 'vision'. While the original Chazon was a vision of destruction and devastation, it is an exception. Vision is normally taken as a positive – the great, fantastic visions of special individuals. Indeed, we are encouraged to imagine a time of peace and tranquillity when Jerusalem will once again reverberate to the sound of the Temple activity and the divine spirit residing within. Judaism's view of commemorating sadness is to still maintain a vision of comfort, joy and redemption.

At a Board Meeting on Monday 7 July the Honorary Executive and Board of Management voted that the throwing of sweets in Shul on Shabbat morning should cease.
There is a lift adjacent to the Freeman Susman Hall staircase.
It will work on Sunday and weekdays.
On Shabbat and Yom Tov the lift will operate on automatic shabbat mode.
However please note:
The lift is ONLY for the use of disabled people and the elderly
The maximum capacity is two people at a time
When in automatic mode the lift must be allowed to operate without assistance - the door will open and close very slowly and must not be pushed or pulled as this will damage the mechanism.
