Thought for the week

It is a great experience to see the inside of a Sefer Torah. It is an even greater privilege to understand the detail and attention that goes into each letter, word, paragraph and page. What appears as a simple biblical transcript is, in fact, much deeper than that. There are major rules and regulations that apply in the manufacture of these divine words.

One rule applies to the spacing between one chapter and another. It is difficult to expand in just a few short lines, but typically a 'closed' chapter will have just a short space of 9 letters between it and the previous one, and always begins in the middle of a line. An 'open' chapter always begins on a new line, with a noticeable gap.

This week the Sidrah – most unusually – begins as a 'closed' chapter. There are many reasons given for this, just check Rashi for some suggestions.
