Thought for the week
This week's Torah reading concentrates on the vestments of the Kohen when serving in the Sanctuary, and subsequent holy Temples. The main Kohen – the Kohen Gadol – had his own distinct uniform, which included items that were more sacred symbols than garments. On the hem of his robe there were bells whose "sound shall be heard when he enters the Sanctuary before G-d and when he leaves" [Exodus: 28; 35]. The contemporary synagogue's Torah scrolls will invariably carry bells on top, which achieve the same purpose.
What is the purpose of the noise from the bells? One idea is that it reminds people of the Kohen's special role – largely performed on their behalf. It was hoped that the individual would be moved to join in the Kohen's endeavour by re-establishing a closer relationship with G-d. In a way, the bells on the Torah scroll carry the same powerful impact. When one hears the sound, one thinks of the Torah and how best to connect with it. It is then that one moves a step closer to G-d.
