Thought for the week

This Shabbat we welcome the incoming month of Adar number 1, which will actually begin on Thursday. As this year is a Jewish leap year, there will be not one, but two Adars.

This extra month is always Adar. Why? In the Megillah it says that the miracle of Purim is in the 12th month called Adar. If one were to add a month elsewhere in the calendar year, Adar would not be the 12th month, but the 13th!!

Accepted that the extra month is near Adar, but why not give it a different, more original, name? Tradition has it that the miracle occurred in a leap year, and in the second month called Adar! We continue to call both the first month Adar (since it is without doubt the 12th month) and also the extra one (since it is the one in which the miracle of Purim actually happened).
