Thought for the week
In the Sidrah of this week, Moses reminds the people of the identity of the two primary craftsmen who, together with a skilled team of artisans, were involved in the Mishkan’s construction. They were Betzalel from the tribe of Judah, and Oholiav from the tribe of Dan. Rashi [Exodus. 35, 34] comments that Judah is recognised as the leading tribe of the 12 Jewish tribes, while Dan was considered as one of the less notable ones (mainly as a result of him being the son of one of the ‘maids’).
Yet, Moses goes to great pains to emphasise that both men, despite their contrasting lineage, were equal in the planning and implementation of the holy, important, project. There is no favouritism in matters of G-dliness; everyone is equal. And Moses felt that he was required to point this out for an additional reason:
Like the two craftsmen, the levels of donation towards the Mishkan were different, but the intention and desire to give was exactly the same! Yes, there were differences in quantity and in objects donated, but the quality (wishing to be part of G-d's special project) was exactly the same; there was a clear and indisputable unity and equality in this regard. A most important lesson for us!
